# Converting PDF documents to image format

Convert PDF documents to images when you need previews, thumbnails, or image-based processing output. Image export makes document content usable in systems that don’t support PDF rendering.

## How Nutrient supports this workflow

Nutrient.NET SDK converts PDF files to images.

You don’t need to manage:

- PDF structure parsing

- Rasterization of vector content and fonts

- Color and resolution rendering details

- Custom rendering pipelines

Use the SDK API to generate image output in your application.

## Complete implementation

This example shows a complete PDF-to-image conversion flow.

Import the Nutrient namespace:

```csharp

using Nutrient;

```

Open the PDF with a [using declaration](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/statements/using). The runtime disposes the document automatically:

```csharp

try
{
    using Document document = Document.Open("input_image_based.pdf");

```

Export the document as a PNG file and catch `NutrientException` to handle SDK errors:

```csharp

    document.ExportAsImage("output.png");
    Console.WriteLine("Successfully converted to output.png");
}
catch (NutrientException e)
{
    Console.Error.WriteLine($"Error: {e.Message}");
    Environment.Exit(1);
}

```

## Multi-page documents

When the input PDF has more than one page, PNG, JPEG, and BMP outputs are written as numbered files (`output-1.png`, `output-2.png`, …) — one image per page. TIFF preserves the single-file multi-page form. Refer to the [PDF pages to images](https://www.nutrient.io/guides/dotnet/csharp/conversion/pdf-pages-to-images.md) guide for the per-page case.

## Summary

The conversion flow has two steps:

1. Open the document.

2. Export it as an image.

Nutrient handles PDF rendering and image generation, so you don’t need to implement rasterization logic yourself.
