# Nutrient PDF to Markdown

PDF to Markdown is a local CLI for converting PDFs to Markdown or text.

Key facts:
- Standard conversion is free and works without an account.
- Vision is for scans, handwriting, formulas, and complex layouts.
- Each input page uses one Vision page from the monthly allowance.
- Failed conversions and `query` don’t use Vision pages.
- Standard can continue when the Nutrient service is unavailable.
- Vision requires a Nutrient account, an API key, or a Nutrient CLI license key.
- Files stay on the user’s computer. Usage reports include the conversion mode and input page count, but not file names, paths, contents, or output.
