Which part of opening a spreadsheet a progress report is about.

Experimental: the spreadsheet API may change or be removed in any release, including minor and patch releases.

reading is getting the file’s contents in hand — for an .xlsx, decompressing each sheet and reading its rows. indexing is finding where each row sits in a saved spreadsheet, and building the rows as it goes. loading is the final crossing into the open spreadsheet.

A spreadsheet does not necessarily pass through all three, and the order they arrive in is not a contract: an .xlsx is converted to the saved format first, so it reports reading and then indexing.
