“Nutrient grew with us. From PDF viewing to annotations to AI-native workflows, it became a core, foundational infrastructure of our stack.”

    Athena Intelligence

    Use case

Deliver AI-driven document workflows for Fortune 500 organizations operating in highly regulated industries.

    Challenges

    • Open source document libraries lacked reliable support for redaction, annotation, and comparison in enterprise workflows.
    • Fortune 500 customers required secure deployment models and strict data governance controls.
    • Supporting regulated environments risked forcing Athena’s small engineering team to build and maintain complex document infrastructure internally.

    Solutions

    • Implemented Nutrient Web SDK to power document rendering, annotation, redaction, and comparison inside the Athena platform.
    • Deployed Nutrient in secure environments compatible with enterprise compliance and data governance requirements.
    • Integrated document capabilities directly into Athena’s AI workflows, creating consistent document behavior across customer deployments.

    Results

    • Enabled compliant document workflows trusted by Fortune 500 customers in regulated industries.
    • Eliminated the need to dedicate 2–3 engineers to maintaining document infrastructure.
    • Delivered reliable document rendering, citations, and redactions across secure enterprise deployments.

Athena Intelligence(opens in a new tab) builds autonomous AI agents for Fortune 500 organizations in finance, legal, and professional services — enabling teams to analyze documents, manage complex workflows, and make high-stakes decisions with AI at the core. Its platform helps Fortune 500 organizations analyze information, manage workflows, and make decisions using AI.

In these environments, documents aren’t just files — they’re sources of truth. Annotations must render correctly, redactions must be exact, and sensitive data must remain within secure infrastructure boundaries.

As Athena began working with enterprise customers across industries like finance and legal, the team realized its early document tooling wouldn’t meet those expectations. Athena needed reliable document infrastructure it could trust in regulated environments.

That’s when the company turned to Nutrient.

    Aldrin Jenson
    Lead Product Engineer

“I don’t think most startups or companies recognize the importance of on-premises deployments in regulated industries. The fact that there are these vendors who see that vision and are ready to support it is a huge unlock.”

The limits of open source at enterprise scale

Like many early-stage companies, Athena initially relied on open source libraries to power its document workflows. These tools worked well for early prototypes, but enterprise customers quickly introduced new requirements. Athena’s platform depended heavily on document interaction, including citations, redaction, rendering, and structured workflows embedded directly into the system.

Supporting these capabilities inside regulated environments created a growing challenge, as enterprise customers required predictable system behavior, secure deployment models, and strict controls around how documents were processed and accessed.

Open source libraries weren’t designed for these demands, and maintaining them internally would have required dedicated engineering resources and introduced unnecessary risk into a critical part of the platform.

Rather than building and maintaining custom infrastructure for every deployment model and customer environment, the team began searching for a production-grade document solution that could support these requirements natively.

That search led Athena to Nutrient.

    Building a compliant document foundation

Nutrient became a foundational component of Athena Intelligence’s platform architecture. Instead of building internal document infrastructure, compliance tooling, and deployment systems from scratch, the team integrated Nutrient directly into its product environment.

Core document operations — including viewing, annotation, redaction, and structured workflows — were embedded into Athena’s platform using Nutrient’s APIs and SDKs. This created consistent document behavior across environments while preserving the strict compliance requirements of Athena’s enterprise customers.

    Aldrin Jenson
    Lead Product Engineer

“Overall, [Nutrient] just seemed easier. It worked well out of the box without us having to do any extra work.”

    Athena Intelligence

Just as important, Nutrient supported the deployment flexibility required by regulated industries. Many of Athena’s customers operate in restricted environments where data cannot leave their infrastructure. Nutrient enabled the platform to support both cloud and on-premises deployments without fragmenting the product experience.

Over time, Nutrient became deeply embedded in the platform’s workflows, supporting everything from document interaction to AI-driven analysis and citation management.

“Nutrient grew with us. From PDF viewing to annotations to AI‑native workflows, it became a core foundational infrastructure of our stack,” Jenson said.

Enterprise infrastructure without the engineering burden

Before implementing Nutrient, Athena Intelligence faced a difficult tradeoff. Supporting enterprise customers in regulated sectors would require building and maintaining its own document infrastructure.

For a small engineering team, that would have meant diverting significant engineering resources to infrastructure instead of product innovation.

    Aldrin Jenson
    Lead Work Engineer

“Without Nutrient, we would probably need two to three engineers just to maintain document workflows.”

    Athena Intelligence

After integrating Nutrient, Athena gained a stable document foundation that meets the expectations of regulated enterprises while remaining easy for the team to maintain. Document capabilities now operate reliably across customer environments without introducing additional engineering overhead.

This enables Athena to support enterprise deployments confidently while keeping its engineering team focused on building AI-driven workflows.

Today, Athena Intelligence can deliver AI workflows that operate reliably in regulated environments. Trust, security, and stability are built into the platform experience, and teams now focus on customer value and product evolution rather than infrastructure maintenance. Nutrient operates as dependable infrastructure beneath the Athena platform, enabling secure document interactions while remaining largely invisible to the teams building and using the product.

    Efficiency

Athena avoids dedicating 2–3 engineers to maintaining document infrastructure.

    Reliability

Document workflows operate consistently across enterprise environments.

    Enterprise readiness

Athena delivers AI workflows that meet the security and deployment requirements of Fortune 500 customers.

A platform built for regulated growth

With Nutrient in place, Athena Intelligence no longer treats regulatory complexity as a constraint. Instead, compliance has become a built-in foundation of the platform. By embedding secure, compliant document workflows directly into its product architecture, Athena can support enterprise deployments without building custom infrastructure for every customer environment. And regulated industries are now a core part of the company’s growth strategy rather than a technical barrier.

With Nutrient providing document infrastructure behind the scenes, the team can continue advancing its AI platform while meeting the evolving security, compliance, and deployment expectations of Fortune 500 organizations.
