Save PDFs to Document Engine on Android
Document Engine stores documents and annotations on a server. Nutrient Instant downloads documents and synchronizes annotations across Android, iOS, and Web apps. For integration details, refer to the Nutrient Instant guide.
By default, Instant synchronizes annotation changes in real time without an explicit save request from your app. For app-controlled synchronization, refer to the manual synchronization guide.
Instant layers represent separate annotation sets on a document. For example, create one layer per student to keep assignment answers separate. For details, refer to the Instant layers guide.
Instant stores offline edits and synchronizes them when a connection becomes available. For details, refer to the offline editing guide.
Uploading a file to Document Engine from the client
To move a local file into Document Engine, implement these steps:
- Upload the file from your app to your backend.
- Forward the file from your backend to Document Engine.
- Store the document identifier that Document Engine returns.
- Return a JSON Web Token (JWT) granting document access from your backend to your app.
- Download the document with Nutrient Instant using the JWT.
Document Engine stores the PDF, annotations, and metadata. Your backend only needs to store the identifier. Document Engine and Instant now manage the document for collaboration, so the app no longer needs the original local file.
