Nutrient Android SDK supports keyboard navigation, screen reader integration, TalkBack, dark themes, and Reader View.

Keyboard navigation

Navigate pages and buttons with the Tab, arrow, and Enter keys. Keyboard navigation also works with TalkBack. For details, refer to the keyboard navigation accessibility blog post.

Screen reader

Extend PdfActivity to integrate Android’s android.speech.tts.TextToSpeech(opens in a new tab) engine. For implementation details, refer to the building a screen reader blog post.

The Android Catalog app includes a screen reader example(opens in a new tab).

TalkBack

Install the Android Accessibility Suite(opens in a new tab), and enable TalkBack in Android settings. TalkBack announces the focused control as you navigate Nutrient’s UI by keyboard or touch.

In Nutrient Android SDK 12.0, TalkBack announces these controls without names because they lack accessibility labels:

  • Previous and next result buttons in the inline search bar
  • Expand and collapse buttons in the document outline

Dark mode

Customize Nutrient’s theme to support users with low vision alongside Android’s high-contrast mode. For details, refer to the customizing appearance guide.

The Catalog app’s dark_theme.xml(opens in a new tab) provides a complete theme extending PSPDFKit.Theme.Dark. Apply it with PdfActivityConfiguration.Builder#themeDark().

Reader View

Enable Reader View through the enableReaderView setting in PdfActivityConfiguration. Reader View provides a simplified reading layout.
